In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted the Resolution 70/1, Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This document lays out the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, defining goals to be reached by all countries until 2030. These 17 SDGs focus on the three major dimensions of sustainable development – social, economic and environmental – and is an action plan for people, the planet and prosperity to foster peace, environmental sustainability and justice and equality for all.
The 2030 Agenda provides a new policy framework worldwide towards ending all forms of poverty, fighting inequalities, and tackling climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.
The EU, in coordination with its Member States, is committed to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and to strive towards a sustainable future for all. The EU SDG list of indicators is aligned as far as appropriate with the UN list of global indicators, but it is not completely identical. This allows to focus on monitoring EU policies and on phenomena particularly relevant in a European context.
